A seasonal companion for farmers who graze.

Hi - I’m Heather 👋 and welcome to my grazing journal.

I will be walking pasture, observing livestock, following nature’s cycles and explaining the decision making behind my grazing planning.

I’ll also be sharing resources from other clever, thoughtful and innovative nature-friendly farmers.

If you are outwintering already, or outwintering curious, this blog is for you. Planning for your next winter starts now.

The plan is, that in a year, or maybe two, this will be the resource I’d wished for when I started farming! 💚

ABOUT ME

I run a herd of around 45 suckler cows and their followers, with my Dad (Philip Close) near Turnberry, in South Ayrshire, Scotland. The herd is PfL Certified, meaning they are 100% pasture-fed, and they live outside all year round.

We are equal opportunity farmers here, so bulls follow the same regime as the cows. They have less work to do, so don’t see why they should have an easier life!

For the last 5 years I’ve been managing the grazing and the breeding programme. We’re in a reasonably wet part of the country so outwintering has its challenges but I am learning more each year.

If you are interested in learning more about how to graze with nature, then there will soon be plenty of content on the blog. I’m also available as a Consultant through Pasture for Life.
